SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

PRINCIPAL Superintendent / Designee As assigned Principal Salary Schedule All school-assigned personnel To utilize effective leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills so as to promote the district's educational philosophies and to assure that the learning environment is conducive to student achievement. Competencies and Performance Standards will be used for principal evaluation in conjunction with measures of student growth.  Measures of student growth will be aligned with the St. John the Baptist Parish School System’s accountability measures as outlined in the Louisiana Accountability System.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1.0 SCHOOL VISION

 

1.1 Sets ambitious, data driven goals and a vision for achievement; invests teachers, students, and other stakeholders in that vision.

? Uses vision and analysis of multiple types of data to set goals

? Keeps school wide goals present for staff and various stakeholders by referencing them in all meetings and planning sessions; ? Actively engages stakeholders in the school’s vision for achievement;

? Shares specific ways families and stakeholders can support student learning;

? Consistently addresses staff or stakeholders who contradict the vision by displaying low or negative expectations;

? Aligns resources: time, human, and when appropriate, fiscal to create and uphold systems that support the school’s learning goals;

? Develops systems to support schedules, calendars that maximize instructional time;

? Ensures that staff has necessary materials, supplies, and equipment.

 

2.0 SCHOOL CULTURE 2.1 Facilitates collaboration between teams of teachers

? Facilitates effective and frequent collaboration between teams of teachers to improve implementation of Common Core and reviewing student learning data for instructional effectiveness and alignment to the Common Core

? Maintains conditions for collaboration of teachers.

 

2.2 Provides opportunities for professional growth and develops a pipeline of teacher leaders

? Improves teacher effectiveness by providing opportunities for professional growth and support 1 Principal Job Description

? Uses data gathered through observations and student assessments to determine what supports best meet needs of each individual teacher to improve overall teacher effectiveness

? Develop a pipeline of teacher leaders to provide additional support to teachers.

 

2.3 Creates and upholds systems which result in a safe and orderly school environment

? Ensures learning environment is conducive to learning

? Implements systems to ensure physical and social  emotional safety is maintained for students and adults

? Develops clear expectations for student and adult behaviors based on school values and beliefs

? Develops systems to ensure that every adult understands their role in implementing both positive and negative consequences consistently implemented

? Supervises equipment management and maintenance and ensure the physical environment is safe

 

3.0 INSTRUCTION 3.1 Observes teachers and provides feedback on instruction regularly

? Ensures a system is in place to complete formal and informal observations

? Ensures observations occur multiple times a year with staff getting regular, consistent, and actionable feedback 

? Ensures that new and/or developing teachers receive additional formative observations

? Completes a rigorous evaluation process based on a review of teacher practice and multiple measures of student outcomes

 

3.2 Ensures teachers set clear, measureable objectives aligned to the Common Core

? Sets annual student learning targets with teachers and ensures support of academic growth of students

? Ensures all teachers are using a curriculum scope and sequence and assessments that are Common Core aligned

? Regularly assess instructional practices and student outcomes

? Ensure teachers modify and differentiate instructional practices supporting SLT growth

 

3.3 Ensures teachers use assessments reflective of Common Core rigor

? Support the selection of assessments and curricular materials aligned to Common core that analyzes student performance on assessments MISCELLANEOUS

? Functions as the Officially Designated Representative of the school system at IEP meetings.

? Serves as a model of professionalism and communicates educational values.

? Assists with the recruiting, selecting, and assigning of appropriate personnel for the effective delivery of the school program. ? Utilizes clear and grammatically correct oral and written expressions.

? Seeks input from parents and the community as to how the quality of education can be improved.

? Involves parents and the community in the activities of the school to build a sense of shared responsibility for the quality of education being provided. 2 Principal Job Description

? Encourage the volunteer participation of parents and the community and uses this resource to enhance the quality of education in the schools.

? Ensures that school facilities are conducive to a positive and safe learning environment.

? Follows the rules and regulations of the St. John the Baptist Parish School Board.

? Notifies supervisor promptly in case of absence, and communicates in advance the date of return so that proper provisions can be made.

? Attends work regularly and arrives punctually.

? Displays proper respect for superiors.

? Observes professional lines of communication at all times with individuals inside and outside the school system.

? Develops and implements a professional growth plan.

? Serves as an acceptable role model for students, demonstrates personal and intellectual honesty and respects the rights of others

? Makes use of constructive criticism and avoids use of sarcasm, undue criticism, inappropriate language and behavior, and use of racial and/or ethnic slurs when with others.

? Accepts other duties as may be assigned which are related to the scope of the job.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT A certified administrator serving in the capacity of principal is required to:  1) work in an office type setting, climate controlled environment adhering to school board energy policy and in outside areas which are subject to climate extremes:  2) may sometimes work evenings, weekends and holidays as required by job responsibilities.

 

COMMUNICATION SKILLS A certified administrator serving in the capacity of principal must:  1) communicate in standard English both orally and in writing.  This must be commensurate with the age and skill of the listener;  2) have ability to accurately give and receive information via tele-communication system;  3) communicate successfully and pleasantly with the public;  4) accurately compile and access data, summarize information and provide written reports to supervisor;  5) represent school system at all various public functions.

 

EQUIPMENT  A certified administrator serving in the capacity of principal must be able to use the telephone, typewriter, micro-computer, facsimile machine, calculator, copy machine, printers, intercom, public address system, security alarm system, and other appropriate office machines.

 

PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT A certified administrator serving in the capacity of Principal must be able to:  1) sit, stand, walk, run, observe and monitor student behavior in all facets of the school environment as required during the work day;  2) operate office equipment;  3) reach, bend, and/or lift 10-50 pounds is sometimes required as well as the physical restraint of another person or persons;  4) provide own transportation to school(s), work locations and meeting sites;  5) have mobility skills necessary to access a variety of work locations. 3 Principal Job Description

 

MENTAL INVOLVEMENT A certified administrator serving in the capacity of principal must:  1) understand and interpret written and verbal instruction from supervisor and must be cognizant of policies and procedures governing discipline and student services in St. John Parish Public School System and their implementation; and, 2) comply with federal, state and parish regulations.

 

HUMAN RELATIONS INVOLVEMENT A certified administrator serving in the capacity of principal must:  1) be able to work compatibly in group settings;  2) serve as a resource to administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, and community;  3) be able to respond positively to supervision and to accept suggestions for improvement.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS A certified administrator serving in the capacity of principal must possess:  1) Master's Degree with Secondary School Principalship/Elementary School Principalship certification in accordance with Louisiana Department of Education Bulletin 746, Revised.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Doctorate Degree, evidence of preparation for middle/junior/high school program administration, and successful school administrative experience.
